The system used herein to allot frequencies to neighbouring tones can be viewed in another light as a system of coordinates with some odd properties. The author monxmood likes to call it "Tone Space", but mathematicians would perhaps vote for the appellation "Fermat Space". Note that three coordinates are required to describe a point's position on a plane, as we are not relying on a right angle between the axes to supply triangulation. On another level we see the concept of distance has been replaced with that of harmonicity. Harmonicity turns out to share the behaviour of the basic forces of Nature. We can therefore dismiss the phrase "inverse of the square of the distance" from our discussions of these forces, and get on with honing our intuitions.
